Ineke van der Valk is a senior researcher with a background in educational studies, ethnic studies and discourse studies. She obtained her doctorate on the interface between social sciences and discourse analysis with a comparative study of the perception of ethnic issues in the political discourse of the Netherlands and France, paying special attention to the extreme right: Difference, Deviance, Threat (Amsterdam, 2002). She worked at the University of Amsterdam, where she participated in a joint research project with the University of Vienna on racism in European countries. She also worked as a senior researcher for the Anne Frank House, were she focused on right extremism, jihadi extremism and processes of radicalization and deradicalization of young extreme right wing radicals. She recently published a book on islamophobia and discrimination in the Netherlands. Her earlier published works concern racism, public perception, human rights, citizenship and integration, the discourse on minorities, the history of immigrants in the Netherlands and education and parenting. Before this she worked as a teacher and community organizer in disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Amsterdam and Utrecht and as a human rights activist with immigrant organisations.
